Hello everyone — In the year 2022, when most of the offices were opened in hybrid mode, didn’t you all feel good to see your coworkers in office in person? Getting that warm smile from your coworker when you enter office or seeing your office help greet you gently in the morning does make your day start on a good note. I did feel all these emotions when I returned back to work from office in the mid of the last year and have realised how much impact I’ve had on my overall being by this.

This topic is very close to me because both in area of my tech expertise and hobbies — this theme forms a major part of my goals when it comes to learning from my peers at work, and networking in toastmasters, and exchanging ideas about things and continuous learning from each other. I have a knack of picking up things easily from my colleagues at work and friends in personal life.

It is a surreal feeling to be back to working from the cubicles, attending stand-up meetings via actually standing , shaking hands with each other, greetings and body language — it’s safe to say now that things have returned to normalcy at work and we can all feel the human connection and warmth again!

What is human connection

Human connection is a deep bond that’s formed between people when they feel seen and valued. During an authentic human connection, people exchange positive energy with one another and build trust.

Why is human connection become even more important especially in today’s complex lifestyle is because after covid when we were confined to stay indoors away from mother nature we were bound to talk more to our family, parents and closed ones which we had taken for granted due to hectic work life and busy schedules even on weekends.

Human beings are social species, wired to connect for all of their basic needs like sharing food, caring for near and dear ones, and building social networks for getting better opportunities. This helps us humans to meet the daily challenges of their environments.

Ways to strengthen human connection

Now the burning question is how do you make long-lasting human connections if you’re shy and it seems intimidating for you to strike a conversation with people around you. Some of the ways that I feel can help you open up and form a meaningful bond with people around are listed below.

Surround yourself with people with common interests

It’s easy to bond with people who share the same interests and hobbies as you. When you are surrounded with people having common hobbies and passion, you become more committed to your goals and keep pushing each other towards your gaols.

Open up to others

If you want to make friends more easily, allow yourself to be more vulnerable with others. Don’t be a curated version of yourself. Be your natural self even though it means to be raw and unfiltered.

Don’t dwell in your phone all the time

It’s easy to retreat into our smartphones when we’re feeling uncomfortable or bored. But this can hinder our ability to make real-life connections especially when you’re out on a dinner with a group of coworkers you should try and have some real conversations with people around you than just checking your phone.

Stay in touch

Human connection needs to be nurtured. For example, if you’ve made a new friend, keep in touch with them to grow your friendship. Regular contact deepens your connections with others and ensures you don’t lose touch with those who matter to you.

Final thoughts

Even though we are in this modern age of social media with lots of technology coming in to make you feel the presence of human with VR, AI, meta-verse etc; a simple handshake, fellow colleagues greeting you good morning with a smile when you reach office can make your day much better after all the human connection is and should be the most valued connection today and also in times to come.
